Why get an executive coach?
You are a good (or great) physician leader. You want to be better.
You want to strategize and think through opportunities. Your colleagues are bright and helpful, but they have their own agendas. You want to formulate your plans with someone whose agenda is your own, someone who can facilitate your best decision.
You have strengths you’d like to improve upon. You have some blind spots and you’d be the first to admit it, though sometimes blind spots are hard to see. You want to recognize the potential flaws in your logic. You want to be more effective.
Your career is advancing. Things are changing. You are trying to understand your position and what you need to do to excel. Leading and managing physicians is very different from seeing patients. You may feel overwhelmed. Where to go from here?
You want an experienced physician coach who can help you sort through your choices and responsibilities. You want someone who can help you create order and stability as you navigate skillfully through your ever-expanding duties. At the same time you want the decisions to be your own, you don’t need someone to tell you what to do.
How does it work?
I coach over the phone or in person. Most clients call once per week initially. Each call lasts from 45 minutes to an hour.
There is generally no charge for the first coaching session. This allows the client to get to know me, and me to get to know the client. We get a sense of whether we are a good coaching fit.
Most sessions start with me asking “What would you like to talk about today?” During some sessions there are specific topics to discuss from the start, “I’m starting to feel overwhelmed,” or “I’d like to figure out how to better communicate with x.” During other sessions the specific agenda may evolve.
Coaching sessions are not therapy sessions.
Who do I work with?
My coaching practice focuses on physicians and senior healthcare executives. I do on occasion take clients outside of healthcare. My clients are self-motivated and highly effective individuals wanting to have a bigger impact.
How is a coach different from a mentor or a consultant?
Consultants diagnose the problem and suggest what to do. Mentors advise based on past personal experience.
We learn a lot from people who “have been there.” Any coaching relationship includes some mentoring and teaching. However, I believe that the most effective change comes from within the individual. You, the individual who “is there” is a better current model than the person who “has been there.”
What do I charge?
My rates vary depending on the coaching situation and are generally equal to your own hourly rate. Price will not keep me from working with an exceptional client.
